Tobacco Taxation Tobacco kills and it is going to kill as large a number as 15 lakh Indians by 2020. It is going to be the key source of cancer in India. As per the WHO Report, the world is experiencing a sort of tobacco epidemic and its consumption can be reduced more effectively only but raising the tax bar to above 75% of the MRP. However, experts believe that the problem in India is not cigarette but smokeless tobacco. This is where experiences of other countries are of limited use to India and it has to fight its own lone battle. The three experts who have touched all these aspects are Dr Jagdish Kaur, CMO, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare; Mr T R Rustagi, Former Joint Secretary, TRU, Ministry of Finance and Mrs Jyotsana Govil from Indian Cancer Society.
